495th Fighter Training Group

Established in Eighth AF: 26 Oct. 43.

History

Fighter replacement pool established at Atcham late 1942. Originally as 6th Fighter Wing which moved in 27 Aug. 42. During early 1943 pilots newly arrived from USA trained in operational procedures and gunnery. Used Spitfires and pilots of 67 Obs. Gp. in training Spitfire pilots. From May 43 established as two squadron P-47 OTU. From Aug. 43 had a few P-38Hs. On 16 Aug. 43 the organisation redesignated 2906 Observation Training Group (P) and activated as 495 FTG on 26 Oct. 43. From Dec. 43 trained P-47 pilots for both 8AF and 9AF. 1st Gunnery & Tow Target Flight attached to group.
