303BG Mission Report - Ammo Dump west of Beaumont-Le Roger Airfield, France. Crews Dispatched: 18 (358BS - 5, 359th - 5, 360th - 2, 427th - 6). Length of Mission: 4 hours, 40 minutes. Bomb Load: 15 x 300 lb H.E. M31 bombs. Bombing Altitude: 22,450 ft. Ammo Fired: 2,066 rounds.
Beaumont-Le Roger Airdrome was today’s target. It was located about 70 miles northwest of Paris. No aircraft aborted the mission. The Forts dropped 35 1/2 tons of 300-lb. M-31 bombs from 22,000 feet through a cloudless sky. All B-17s dropped their bombs well inside the target area. Great clouds of smoke rose where direct hits on the ammunitions and gasoline dumps caused tremendous explosions. The dispersal areas and airdrome buildings were leveled as a result of the excellent aim of the bombardiers.
Weather for the trip was perfect. Very little flak was seen. Only two enemy fighters were observed and they did not come in to attack. Spitfire IXs gave escort all the way to the target and on the return.
